I have recntly installed an aftermarket mac straight pipe muffler on my bike and at idle it sounds great. However when I reved it or was riding it the backfires and hesitations were terrible. I called my local dealer and they told me it was running too lean due to the zero back pressure. Instead of buying a new set of jets for the bs40ss I took out the white spacer as indicated in pervious letters, set the air screw a little richer and turned back the idle. It took a little playing to get the idle right so that the bike didnt die when i decelerated, but it still has a few minor remaining backfires. Would switching to a hotter plug solve this? or should I spend the extra cash and get a new set of jets/needle? BTW my slide for the needle was scored badly(The moly coating-black coating) was almost worn off from the front side of the slide and caused it to bind slightly at times replacing it solved that though). Other than that the 1986 savage that I own has been great.... well aside from the time I tried to catwalk it and blew the top end apart.... and the starter brushes got worn out and melted the commutator (I just got some new brushes and turned the commutator down) and the signal light sockets getting corroded and needing replacing.... hey wait a minute..... this thing is starting to cost me money.... well I like the bike too much to sell. Plus my wife wants it and for me to get a bigger machine. Thanks for any help on the backfire question.
